US Medical School Entrance And AcceptanceWhen you make the decision to become a full doctor, there are approximately seven additional years of education training beyond your undergraduate degree. There are certain medicine specialties that require even longer for obtaining your doctor's license. Traditionally, you should expect to spend a minimum of four years in the medical school programs and then another three years completing your residency requirements before you can become a certified doctor.
The first requirement to enter a US Medical School is to attend a traditional four year post-secondary school of your choice. Some colleges specialize in preparing to become a doctor and one of these should be your first choice of schooling after you complete high school. While you are in college, keep in mind that there is a great deal of competition for doctors. Focus on science related courses because these will help you with the Medical College Admissions Test, also known as MCAT. A strong science background will enable you to do better for your MCAT and will place you in a better standing with the officers that process admissions. However, remember that you will be required to write very well and of course have strong critical thinking skills. The humanities during your undergraduate college years can help you achieve these necessary skills. Maintain high grades, obtain a high class ranking and do your best during your undergraduate studies to increase your chances of doing well on the MCAT and to be accepted into a US Medical School. After obtaining your undergraduate college degree, it will be time to take the actual MACT. The majority of the MCAT is multiple choice format questions. Like other exams, the MACT is a timed exam. The actual exam consists of four sections that you will need to complete before the time runs out. The four sections include the general sciences, the biological sciences, some verbal reasoning and a writing section. Don't be caught off-guard by the actual timed essays that are part of the MCAT. After completing the MCAT exam it is then time to actually apply for the US Medical School of your choice. During your undergraduate studies, you should have been looking for a specific graduate school to attend. The majority of the graduate schools will accept the American Medical College Applications Services application from students. This application can be located on the Internet and save you a great deal of time applying for graduate programs. With the application, you will also be required to provide a general personal statement, give copies of recommendations from other people and of course your college transcript. With a solid and good transcript and a competitive score on your MCAT exam, you should be accepted into a US Medical School of your choice. There you will continue your education for approximately four years and then work directly with patients under close supervisions for additional three or more years for your residency program. Many students are able to obtain full time doctor positions from their residency programs. The path to entering a US Medical School is demanding but the rewards are tremendous when you receive your license to be a doctor. |
